What are Porifera?
- The phylum Porifera refers to an assortment of aquatic sponges.
- The respiration of porifera is very strange.
- Most organisms from the porifera phylum do not have a respiratory system but breathe through oxygen diffusion which allows oxygen to pass from the water into the body of the sponge (porifera) to be used as nutrients.
These three diagrams represent the three body types of porifera. Each plays the same role in distributing oxygen and nutrients to the body.
Porifera are divided into three classes: Calcarea, Glass Sponges, and Demosponges. Calcarea are typically represented by all three body types. Glass Sponges and Demosponges on the other hand can only be leuconoids.
The respiratory system doesn't contain organs. Instead, the system works in a way in which water comes in through pores on the side, and water goes up as it runs out of nutrients to gather. After this the sponge tightens, pushing the water out of its system and making room for new water.
